Harold Davis becomes a Moab Master

We are excited to announce the addition of photographer Harold Davis to our Moab Masters program. Harold is a renowned photographer, artist and author who offers a unique vision and voice to the Moab Masters program.

Harold’s meticulous printing skills are present in every print he produces, and we’re thrilled that he chooses Moab as the paper to support his images.

“I adore working with the hand-crafted Moab substrates, and in particular I am infatuated with Slickrock Metallic for much of my printmaking. It is bold and dramatic, and at the same time paradoxically subtle. In my monochromatic imagery I strive to extend the dynamic range, and Slickrock supports this with a multidimensional look. Slickrock prints show an incredible range of tonality in both color and black & white. It's also particularly interesting the way the metallic pearl transposes for white---one impact is that Slickrock prints shift in their presentation of negative space as the light they are viewed with also shifts. Highly recommended!”

Ryszard Horowitz @ Hallmark

Last night, Ryszard Horowitz - Moab Master and Canon Print Master - gave a four-hour presentation at the Hallmark Institute touching on his early jazz work, his commercial photography and his epic commissioned projects.

Horowitz is a true pioneer in photo composition with a rich career spanning over five decades.

This was the first time that I had heard his talk and was mesmerized by his forward-thinking images and behind the-scenes stories. Horowitz's work combines artistry with art history breaking every rule to compose an image in his unique voice.

His parting wisdom was to dream big and let nothing stand in your way - especially to those who say it can't be done.

Blue Moons | Yellow Cows | Green Tambourines

Just came across this amazing book by Michael Glenwood.  Illustrations & pages done on Rives BFK and tipped in prints on Entrada.

Created in 2008 for a Book Arts class at the
Corcoran College of Art, the books subsequently found their way into three different gallery shows,
accompanied by a full suite of 31 framed prints, and three of the illustrations
were honored by being selected for the Society of Illustrators juried exhibition.

Kseniya Simonova

This post has nothing to do with Moab, paper, printing nor photography, but some things are just too cool not to share.

The artist, Kseniya Simonova, age 24, uses "sand animation" to show how ordinary people were affected by the German invasion during World War II.  Her unique talent is mesmerizing.  This video is from "Ukraine’s Got Talent", where she was the winner.

From the UK Guardian, "Here, she recounts Germany conquering Ukraine in the second world war. She brings calm, then conflict. A couple on a bench become a woman's face; a peaceful walkway becomes a conflagration; a weeping widow morphs into an obelisk for an unknown soldier. Simonova looks like some vengeful Old Testament deity as she destroys then recreates her scenes - with deft strokes, sprinkles and sweeps she keeps the narrative going. She moves the judges to tears as she subtitles the final scene 'you are always near'."

"Sewing" the Seeds of Love with Entrada

We recently had the pleasure of coming across Tsilli Pines, a Northwest artist who uses Moab Entrada Rag papers in her collection of modern wedding certificates, called New Ketubah.  Her Ketubahs are heirloom pieces personalized for each couple and made to order.

Naturally, she uses only the very best materials for longevity and for a tactile, luxurious quality. In addition to her modern take on a several-thousand-year-old tradition, what makes Tsilli's use of Entrada so special is that parts of the design are hand-sewn into the paper.
